Sarah dug in the rich earth. A chicken scratched nearby watching for worms or other tasty morsels the hoe might turn up. The young woman straightened, strands of long black hair clinging to her damp face. She looked over at the house as she wiped her forehead with the back of her arm. She saw the movement of a curtain but could make out nothing more.

They wouldn’t speak to her; her parents couldn’t accept that she had her own life to lead, that she wanted to make her own decisions about her future. Shunned. A tear trickled from the corner of one eye as she blinked to hold her emotions in check. ‘Will you still talk to me?’ she thought as she looked at the chicken. It was then that it occurred to her that exclusion could be practised by anyone.

When the early morning bus left town the next day Sarah was on it.
