Oh, I called my lawyer yesterday, in need of a defense, Just in case I have a fine to pay for criminal offense. I will break the law, I do confess - I'll drive beyond the speed That the scientists have always said you never can exceed!
Oh! what a rush! And Oh! what delight! As laws of Physics protest and strike! For I shall pass the speed of light As I pedal toward the sunset on my ten speed bike!
And as I approached that magic 'C', then Albert gave a laugh And he plotted my velocity with care upon his graph. Much more swiftly still I pedaled then; I strove with all my might, For I hope to be quite famous when I pass the speed of light!
Oh! what a rush! And Oh! what delight! As laws of Physics protest and strike! For I shall pass the speed of light As I pedal toward the sunset on my ten speed bike!
Now I see the world is all a blur, as I go racing by And I know that Einstein will concur that I'm a speedy guy, Oh, I think this rush is better than Nintendo or Atari; But I never would have guessed I'd end at Proxima Centauri!
Oh! what a rush! And Oh! what delight! As laws of Physics protest and strike! For I have passed the speed of light As I pedaled toward the sunset on my ten speed bike!
Oh! but how the time has quickly flown, as I was on my journey - And now all my friends are dead and gone, and so is my attorney, Sadly, when they brought me to the jail, and threw away the key, Though I loudly begged and cried and wailed, none came to rescue me.
Oh! what a rush! And Oh! what delight! As laws of Physics protest and strike! For I have passed the speed of light As I pedaled toward the sunset on my ten speed bike!

Comments MrPhysics May 23 | Shades of George Gamow! I wonder if physics teachers still have their students read Mr. Tompkins. I first ran into him in my Senior Theoretical Physics Course with Prof Kreuger many years ago. What fun we had looking at pictures of Tompkins' Bicycle wheels (and Tompkins himself) change shape as he approached the speed of light. ~Posted by MrPhysics, May 23 | Rabbit Stu May 23 | I had forgotten all about Mr. Tompkins - I was drawing inspiration more from Tom Lehrer and his math/science songs. ~Posted by Rabbit Stu, May 23 | Mathax May 23 | Are you like Zefram Cochrane? The one who invents warp drive? ~Posted by Mathax, May 23 | Rabbit Stu May 27 | Not everything is about Star Trek, grasshopper... ~Posted by Rabbit Stu, May 27 |
