It split the midnight sky, this brilliant light -
A brief yet splendid swiftly falling star;
See how it pierces darkness in its flight,
And catches every upturned eye afar.
In envy of its course, I must confess,
I dreamed of flying, and my heart was stirred.
"I wish," I said with sudden eagerness,
"That I could be transformed into a bird!"
Alas! My haste had caused me to forget
That falling stars grant wishes every night,
And I had cause to be a bit upset;
Life as a bird can be a dreadful plight -
For though a kiwi is a lovely thing
It seems I'm stuck without a single wing.
