I would host a parade with all the best marching bands,
I would ride at the front and wave to my fans
There'd be giant balloons, beautiful girls, and banners unfurled -
That's what I would do, if I were king of the world.

I would appear as a star on movies and shows
The funny ones, and even serious ones, I suppose.
Every writer and director would be at my command -
That's what I would do, if I were king of the land.

I would eat and drink, and dance the night away;
I would be seen at every gala and each soiree.
I would insist upon two twenty week vacations -
That's what I would do, if I were king of the nations.

I would find all the wisest, most brilliant of minds
I would ask their advice about ruling mankind
Then I would laugh, and ignore their opinions -
That's what I would do, if I were king of dominions.

"Work?" What do you mean by that, you silly old goose?
How did you get to be so absurdly obtuse?
Being king of the world is no work and all play -
It's what I do best, so vote for me please, today!

This is the novel which introduces us, for the very first time, to Agatha Christie's Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot.
