The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks is a tale about a boy growing up in a terribly abusive street gang, how he escapes by apprenticing himself to the most notorious assassin in the city, and how he in turn becomes the Night Angel, a skilled killer with magic powers, albeit, one with a conscience. I read the last 600 pages of this book Saturday afternoon and found the story intriguing, frightening, and impossible to put down. Some folks say that you should never judge a book by its cover, though I must admit that the cover illustration with its grey clothed assassin and drawn bow cloaked in swirling purple smoke are the main reason I picked the book up in the first place. While reading the book I found myself continually thinking, "this would make an epic action movie", and the relationship probems faced by Azoth/Kylar (the main character), who has been told that life is meaningless and that he can never love, and the beautiful but facially scarred girl who was his childhood friend added a needed touch of drama and romance. This is one book that defenitly lives up to its flashy cover illustration. A must read for sure!
