This post is Part 3 of a writing series titled Pearl's Story.

Pearl swam quickly towards the surface. She needed air. Her time was up. Her brain and lungs screamed for oxygen. She hit the air with a large breath of air and she coughed as water got into her hasty lungs.

After two more breaths, she screamed as she was pulled back under. Pain split through her legs. She could feel hot blood surround her body, sinking through the water. She struggled against the large animal that had her fully in its mouth.

She gestured with her hand and the shark went flying away from her, ripping skin along with it. Stars danced in front of her face as she momentarily blacked out. She woke to see Clam Shell laughing ten feet below her as the shark took another lunge at her. She pulled all of her strength together and swam through the water. The shark was just behind her, nipping at the tip of her tail. Her mouth hung open in a silent scream as the shark got closer and closer...And then it was gone. Pearl looked around frantically as her vision started to go black again. The blood was seeping out of her wound, though the salt water was helping a bit. The pain coursed through her body as she stopped completely, treading the water with her hands.

Suddenly, Clam Shell stood before her. They weren't in the water anymore. They were on the small island off the coast of Cuba that Pearl had called home her entire life. Clam Shell stood laughing and pointing at her as he had when she had been chased by the shark. He stood surrounded by ten bodies. They lay on the sand around him. Pearl screamed. She could feel hands grabbing her shoulders. Clam Shell's fish-smelling face loomed before her, his sickening grin challenging her, teasing her. He shook her again, gently...

"Ma'am, we need you to wake up." Pearl felt the soft hands again, shaking her shoulders. She was laid gently on a hard surface as a searing pain shot up her legs. She could feel herself screaming and immediately stopped. She was fighting against someone. She opened her eyes as adrenaline shot through her body. The young man who had found her looked down at her with concern. She lay outside, though she was high up. She was being pushed through a small clearing. Lights flashed through the air.

Pearl was dropped down and then lifted into a small, cold, metal area. She could see the shining silver roof. She could hear voices around her, but she couldn't see anything because of something stiff around her neck. She reached her hand up to touch it and felt a warm hand grip hers.

"No, ma'am, please don't move." A man's face appeared in Pearl's eyesight. He had short-cropped blonde hair and a soft, boyish face. He was wearing some kind of uniform but, after identifying that it was a uniform, Pearl couldn't tell anything else. "Do you know your name?" The man asked, pointing a small flashlight into her eyes. She blinked and closed her eyes against the bright light. She could hear a loud metallic clanging as two doors were slammed shut and then she could feel the vehicle move underneath her.

The young girl was confused and disorientated, but she knew that for some reason she shouldn't be going with these people. She struggled to stand up, but pain shot through her body and she fell unconscious again.
