Zane stepped into the small room. He put the small bouquet of flowers on the table to his right and stepped up to the bed. The smell of the room was almost overwhelming. It smelled like all hospitals, though he had never been able to put his finger on the exact smells. Dhelyla stepped up behind him and put the little glass figurine she had bought from the gift shop for 65 cents next to the flowers. She walked over to the bed and looked around.
"Why aren’t there any more flowers or cards?" She whispered, trying not to wake up the young girl on the cot next to her.
Zane cringed as he remembered the folder outside the door that read "Jane Doe". He didn't think that they would actually call someone that if they didn't know who they were. He felt as if he were in a movie when he saw that.
"They don't know who this girl is." He answered, hoping this would be enough. It wasn't.
"But somebody has to be missing her, right?" Dhelyla looked down at the girl and gently touched her scratched and bruised face. The girl's hair had been brushed out and put into a tight braid. Even with all of the scratches, Zane had to admit that the woman was pretty. He looked at Dhelyla and gestured to her.
"C'mon, we have to go." He whispered.
"Wait!" She almost yelled, holding her hand up. "I think she's waking up!" Zane looked at the girl and, sure enough, her eyes fluttered open quietly. Her eyes seemed to focus and then she looked straight at him.
The doctor's had told Zane when he had come to the hospital the day after he had called the ambulance and they had taken the injured girl away that she had lost a lot of blood and would probably die. She had survived the next few days, though, and had even woken up a couple of times. Zane had only come to the hospital once to check up on her and that had been the day before. It had now been a week since he had found her and the doctors told him that she had only woken up a few times and then only for a few seconds at a time.
Zane had felt that he needed to make sure that this girl was safe. He didn't know why. Now, the woman stared at him with a mixture of surprise and relief. He smiled shyly at her and stepped over to stand next to Dhelyla.
"Hello," Dhelyla whispered gently. The woman turned her eyes from Zane to look at Dhelyla. She didn't seem to see her at first, but then she smiled slightly.
"Hello," she croaked, her throat sore.
"What is your name?" Dhelyla asked.
"My name...my name is Pearl." Pearl looked quickly at Zane and then back at Dhelyla. "And who are you?" Pearl's accent was thick and strong. Zane still couldn't place it.
"My name is Dhelyla and this is my brother Zane. Zane saved you. He found you in our backyard and called the ambulance. The doctor's said you would have died if you had been left there any longer." Dhelyla's words came out in a rush. "What were you doing in our backyard?"
"Dhelyla!" Zane cried out at her rudeness.
Pearl smiled weakly at the young girl and then pain crossed her face again. Zane could see the large bandages that they had on her legs. He flinched as he remembered the large cuts.
"I didn't know it was your backyard, but if I had I would have...walked farther to your house." Pearl smiled again and then she flinched. She grabbed at her stomach.
Zane reached out and grabbed her hand automatically, not thinking. "The doctor said that you had a couple of broken ribs besides your broken leg and gashes." Pearl's hand felt cold in his and he pulled away quickly.
A nurse stepped in the door and looked at Pearl. When Pearl saw the woman, she looked around her, fear apparent on her face. "A hospital?" She whispered, and then she fainted.
The nurse walked quickly over to the bed. She frowned at Zane. "You should have told us that she was awake. We need her name and information!" The nurse pushed them out the door.
"She said her name is Pearl." Zane said as he was herded out the door. The nurse paused momentarily, then continued to usher him out.
"Good; now, she needs her rest." The nurse shut the door behind Zane. He sighed and grabbed Dhelyla's hand as they walked out of the cold hospital.
