Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

prewash
My hands rub vigorouslyAgainst the metal grate
And I soak my shirt
Caked with dirt
In the soap
I rub
My
Hands
And I find
The detergent
I put it in the washer
And I turn the knob and
Water pours out of it
Out of the washer
I put in my shirt
To clean it
But I
Know
That it will
Not be fully clean
If I hadn’t washed it
First with soap vigorously
I guess that that is the
Way that cleansing
Works; one has
To clean
And
Rub and
Clean and rub
Until it exhausts you
Then you let another help
You cleanse the dirty
Spot in your soul
That is caked
With dirt
