How strange it was that heaven's child
would walk the earth with us.
Thus how much more devotedly
should we give Him our trust.

But though He wept and longed to gather
us into His arms,
we sought a military captain
instead, and caused Him harm.

Such love poured out was never seen
before, or has been since,
nor such humility to suffer,
when one is a Prince.

And even then, since He arose,
His love can take our place -
no depth of our idolatry
need keep us from His grace.

How strange that still, our fickle hearts
ally with other leaders,
to cry out with the priests that night -
"We have no king but Caesar!"

Probably Ben Bova's best science fiction tale, this is the story of the first manned expedition to Mars.
