Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Pasameerday on October 30, 2013

My Kingdom

The kingdom was cold and the kingdom was crumbled.
My fingertips brushed what was left of the walls,
Leaving crimson dust on the tips of my fingers,
The blood from the bricks of my broken city.
And I walk to my rest.
As bloodied suns set wistfully on broad horizons,
Wishing one more time for one more set of eyes
To watch the burn and watch the cease,
And to cry when the light hits their smiles.
And I watch and I weep.
To glare at the tangled vines constricting me and
My city is the only freedom I have left.
I’ll scream to the stars for the moon is long gone
And all I’ll ever have now is my bricks and their blood.
And I run ‘til I can’t run anymore.
The cape across my shoulders snakes behind me
Hissing, echoing my choked up breathing
Winds are rushing letting me feel light
From the slowly rising horizon
And then I let myself fall and I let myself down.

Or can I halt my feet and turn around?

My kingdom faces me with bravery,
Lungs churning air and coughing smoke
She breathes one more time and so she knows
And now so I know.
The cape across my shoulders swirls at my feet.
And I take one step back
And I take one step forward
And I run
And I’ll keep running

‘til my city is all gone.
