Just a mustard seed among the mountains, just a snowflake in the wind

Among the mountains, you’re just a mustard seed,
You’re tucked away unnoticed in the dale;
Obscured in shadows cast by titan peaks,
You’re buried deep within the muddy soil.

Don't hope to be a towering mountain peak;
Don’t envy elevation that they’ve found;
Just grow down low with me as simple seeds,
Together sucking moisture from the ground.

You’re just an ocean wave that’s run aground,
You’re just a snowflake on the raging wind,
But “just” is just a silly, childish sound
That’s meaningless for children of the King.

Beneath the tread of man’s indifferent heel,
Forgotten in time’s dancing, heedless swirl,
You're just a wooden box that's buried deep
And filled with lovely gems and priceless pearls.

And though they pass you by, like all the rest,
Though Fame and Fortune found a better gig,
A buried treasure's treasure nonetheless
For one who’s wise and deep enough to dig.

You’re just an ocean wave that’s run aground,
You’re just a snowflake on the raging wind,
But “just” is just a silly, childish sound
That’s meaningless for children of the King.

The forest land is made of many trees,
The largest flock consists of countless birds,
But some trees drink of living water, and
Each bird is loved and cherished by the Lord.

You’re just an ocean wave that’s run aground,
You’re just a snowflake on the raging wind,
But “just” is just a silly, childish sound
That’s meaningless for children of the King.

Visit this author's page
A Christmas song that questions some of our concepts about the Christmas scene

Was it snowy and white on that first Christmas night?
Or maybe it was rainy and cold?
Was it calm and serene, like a Hallmark scene?
With halos and love's radiant beams?

A Kodak moment for all the world
To place upon their greeting cards,
But somehow it seems to be an unlikely scene,
With cattle and sheep and a dirty stable yard
Maybe it was raining that night...

Was that holy night a silent night?
With crowds on the Bethlehem streets?
Was the baby's sleep dreamless and deep
Or did he cry like any other child?

A Kodak moment for all the world
To place upon their greeting cards,
But somehow it seems to be an unlikely scene,
With cattle and sheep and a dirty stable yard
Maybe it was raining that night,
Maybe he was crying that night...

Was there peace and joy for that poor little boy,
Fleeing to a faraway land?
For we never sing of that angry king
Who slaughtered all the innocent ones.

A Kodak moment for all the world
To place upon their greeting cards,
But somehow it seems to be an unlikely scene,
With cattle and sheep and a dirty stable yard
Maybe it was raining that night,
Maybe he was crying that night,
Maybe there was death in the air that night...

Visit this author's page
A villanelle about the bells of Christmas chiming out peace on earth good will toward men

When bells resound from every steepled hall
And frantic throngs of shoppers pause their rush,
The song of peace on earth rings out to all.

Oh! let our hearts be still, and fear forestall,
And hear the song that rises o'er the hush,
When bells resound from every steepled hall.

Call out! You bells, and every soul enthrall
With lovely ringing lines both sweet and lush;
The song of peace on earth rings out to all.

Though winter's breath is chill, and snowstorms squall
And curbs are dark and cold with icy slush,
The bells resound from every steepled hall.

Yet o'er the song there comes a deeper call,
For God Himself speaks in the nighttime hush -
His song of peace on earth rings out to all.

And oh! That heav'nly peace would break the walls
Of greed and hate by which our souls are crushed!
For bells announce from every steepled hall:
The Prince of Peace, the Babe, has come for all.

Visit this author's page
