Mid-September brought a dreadful sight:
Errant breezes tugging at the leaves,
Sparing most, yet stealing some away
(Still green and drinking sap from tender twigs)
To toss and spin and come at last to rest,
Too early fallen on the summer grass -
A bitter hint of why we say, "this mortal life."
