In Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Each trumpet rises with dramatic sound, Yet each conforms to Copland's clever plan; Sweet melody and harmony resound. Not so the fanfare of these common men - These politicians who would woo the crowd - As careless notes in discord rise unplanned And unskilled braggarts blow their horns aloud. Oh, is there not a single player here Among this boastful, proud menagerie, That plays a trumpet song both sweet and clear, And plays that song with skill and honesty? With all these common men, there's no defense For candidates that lack in common sense.
