Rustling, Whispering, Dying: A poem about fall leaves that asks questions about dying. Reincarnation, resurrection, or nothing but the grave?

Rustling, Whispering, Dying

Posted by Douglas, Oct 4, 2007. 202 views. ID = 92
This post was written in 12 minutes.
Last night, in two totally separate contexts in two different places, I heard someone quote John 14:1 from the Bible: "Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me." This is the beginning of Jesus' famous promise of a glorious "celestial dwelling".

That, along with the fall season, was what prompted this poem.

Fall leaves outside my window -
Rustling, whispering, dying.
Like sandpaper brushing on my wall -
Scratching, scraping, dying.
Flames of orange, yellow, red -
Dancing, blazing, dying.

What secret do you know,
What beauty are you finding,
What hope have you secured,
In dying?

Will you return to us again renewed,
Dressed as before in muted green?
Or press on to grand celestial homes,
To join eternal gilded scenes?
Or will you simply lie among your peers,
To decay en masse, forgotten and unseen?

What secret do you know,
What beauty are you finding,
What hope have you secured,
In dying?

Fall leaves outside my window -
Rustling, whispering, dying.
