Practicing Poetry

This post was written in 6 minutes.

I was asked today for some suggestions for improving poetry-writing skills. The person who asked was looking for advice specific to his writing, but it got me started thinking...

Wouldn't it be nice if we offered some writing exercises to help people get better at writing poetry?

So this is what we're going to do; over the course of the next few weeks, in addition to a writing prompt each week, the Discussion Forum will contain a new thread each week for trying out a simple poetry exercise.

We invite anyone who is interested in getting better at poetry to come visit the forum, to practice their poetry skills. For this first exercise, I suggest visiting the forum every day and adding a new post, so you'll do the exercise seven times before the week is over!

Before we're done, we'll cover topics such as metrical feet, meter, rhyme, similes, metaphors, personification, and probably other subjects as well.

Look in the "All About Writing" section of the forum; the first writing exercise has already been posted!

Excellent. I haven't had any experience writing poetry. This should be fun...
