With "Foundation", Isaac Asimov launched a series of novels that described the demise of a Galactic Empire, and the beginnings of a new empire based on the science of "psychohistory", by which the actions of large masses of people can be mathematically predicted.
Originally, Asimov intended this to be the first of three novels which would take the fall of the Roman Empire and put it in a futuristic setting. Eventually, however, Asimov turned this into a much larger series of books, and tied it to other books he had written, especially the Robot books.
