Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Brian Sloan on October 2, 2014
"This is not a real story. I have never and will never have a boyfriend, and I love all Christmas songs except the modern renditions of the classics. I even sing them out of season. But it seemed like a nice image."

Christmas Already?

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holiday style...

I stood at the corner, boots firmly planted in three inches of slushy snow as a brief powder trickled down from the moody skies. But although the sun was hiding, my day seemed bright--James was meeting me here any minute now. I hadn't seen my boyfriend in almost a week, which was basically forever. I checked my phone through blue mitten hands and sniffled slightly in the cold. He was a little late, but when wasn't he? It was one of the things I found charming about him.

Behind me, the little antique store chimed softly above all the bustle, and I heard purposeful footsteps approaching. I turned and ran over towards James, who stood with his coat turned up and head down against the gentle snowfall. Shouting his name, I ran up and hugged him. He stiffened for a moment, then reluctantly returned the hug. I held him at arm's length and looked up, questioningly.

"Is everything okay? You seem down."

"Yeah, listen, Jenn...I...I don't think this relationship is going to work."

"Wh--we've been dating for three years. What...why?"

"I just don't love you anymore. I'm sorry." He hunched his shoulders at the coldness of his own words. "I'll see you around." He turned and walked back the way he came.

...Hear them ring, hear them ring...

One snowflake detached itself from my eye and flew off into the white.
