Farewell to 2013

This post was written in 33 minutes.
Looking back at the past year, I realized I would miss being slowed down by illness the most, because it brought me such peace of mind.

A few years ago a colleague of mine got a heart attack. He told me it was the best thing that happened to him in years. In fact he could recommend the experience to everyone.
I could hardly believe it then, but now I understand. When looking back the best thing that happened to me in 2013 was getting ill. Normally I could get everything done on power of will, using my body as a kind of personal servant. But all that changed by getting ill. My body no longer follows at the same pace. It stopped me in my tracks, something I would not have been able to do by will. At first of course there was anger, frustration, resistance. I didn't want to live on pills, didn't want to miss deadlines, didn't want to be tired all the time.
But then I decided to embark on an experiment. What if I would try to accept what happened to me. Things changed. Where I rushed myself in the past, there is a sense of peace now and I'm feeling more alive while less healthy. Thus my illness turned out to be a precious gift and the best thing that happened to me in the past year.

Yesterday my pastor was on vacation, so I had the privilege of speaking at my home church, and I spoke on contentment. Your post reminds me of that message. A very inspirational way of looking at the troubles of life!
