"I can hear this old tree now saying, "don't get old"."

Long Life Span

People tell me I'm thousands of years old. I don't know about that. Sometimes it feels like I've always been here and sometimes I feel like I just woke up today. If I am that old I don't really know what I did with all that time. Standing here looking out at the sky mostly I guess. It's a big sky. I think there used to be a river that ran below it, but it's gone. I don't know where it went or when. I just know it was there and it ain't there now. At least I'm pretty certain it was there. A lot of things don't seem so clear anymore. Maybe it's the mist that hangs round here. It swallows things up - even trees. That mist comes swirling round here in the morning and the trees are gone by noon. All swallowed up and gone. But I'm here. I'm still here. And the big sky is still here. The mist can't swallow that. I like the rain. A tree gets weary without the rain now that the river's gone. A tree gets weary. But I guess I'll keep standing here till it's my turn to fall. Won't be long now. Won't be long...
