Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Elizabeth L on December 31, 2010
"Today I could believe spring will eventually come - I know it's going to be shoved back under the winter weather soon, but I had one moment to feel it. "

Advent of a Season

God knew we humans always need a bit of color in our lives; that's why He gave us the evergreens. November blue pines, sadly waving the old year goodbye; Christmas Douglas firs, solemn and elegant with their Yuletide duty; white pines, the last reminders of the coming spring with their waxy, bright green needles.

I'd just about reached my winter suffocation point when I stepped out here on our breezeway between the main hospital and our interpreting office. It's living up to its name today - fresh, cool, and funneling air at a rate that interrupts me every few words as it pushes my hair into my eyes. I can see my office from here, my Christmas cards dangling from the overhead cabinet, but we're not going back there yet. That's winter. No, I've found a bit of color to hang on to today, and it's fresh, real, and calling my name. This hesitant blue sky and the lone white pine peeking through the oak's dead leaves - this is spring, an early December tease that escaped March and snuck back through the year. An ultrasound view of the new life that's going to be born, born soon.

Yes. God knew we need color as much as we need fresh air, and today He gave me both.

Thanks.
