This Way And That

Adjacent doors provide easy open access
to a lifetime of neighborly bonds;
barred windows create a permanent barrier
to out-of-bounds unions and much-needed friends.
A middle-aged man that they say "never grew up"
with his genuine smiles and simple childlike good ways;
and a young punk full of sass and snickering smarts
sloughing through in an audacious and un-mimicked style.
A sparkling and vivacious elderly woman
ever full of unreserved love toward all mankind;
a scared and lonely young teenage girl
struggling in constant pain and doubt of self worth.
The world continually turns and spins
on an axis of polar extremes at either end;
and our lives on Earth revolve always around
the true awareness of both sides of the fence.
