A Hungry Lion

Guttural sounds errupt from within, voicing the pleasure of my current state. What luck is this that a meal should fall from the sky? I can see my prey. I can smell the fear as it realizes we are here. Every muscle tightens as I lower, slowly, closer to the dry earth. Shaking and aligning every bone preparing for the attack that is imminent. My strong tail rises. My eyes pierce throught the darkness allowing the ability to see the massive familiar lions aproaching the prey from the across the abyss. Lions that have shared the cylindrical stone walls for countless neglected nights.

The circling begins. Sidestepping deliberately, purposefully. The center of our circle, the man. Weak! What can man do? What weapon can he possess that can save him from his impending death? The man watches and turns quickly trying to see us all at once. How futile his attempt has become.

A signal from the left. A low rumble to warn that the attack will begin. My strong legs push from the earth. They were designed for this moment alone. The man has shifted. No, fallen to his knees looking up at the dense black ceiling of the den. The second that should have connected teeth to skin came and went.

Confusion filled me as the vast darkness overhead was replaced by bright glowing light. Cowering in fear I watched as a figure outstretched its hands to reach for me. The fear and voracious hunger being overcome by peace and contentment as the being that had just appeared spoke to the man.

Without knowing, I fell onto the dusty earth. My pack had found me and laid comfortingly at my side. The senses satisfied, sleep found our small group and washed over us in a gentle tide.
