Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by AnnabelRose on June 23, 2010
"Okay, I realize I got a little creative here. I didn't write this from my point of view because I can't write poems from that perspective. I remembered seeing a guy and his wife at the Louvre a few summers ago, and he looked like he had no desire to be with her at all. So....I hope you read this and enjoy it!"

Famous Painting

It all began one bright, sunny day,
My wife had decided it was high time we got away,
Although I would rather stay home and admire the TV from afar,
She unplugged it and told me to "Get in that car!"

From Van Gogh, to Degas,
From Degas, to Vermeer,
She dragged me all around,
I had no desire to be here,
Da Vinci is alright,
Chagall makes me quiver,
Dali has an odd habit of making me shiver.

Then, I came across it,
so beautiful and new,
I didn't exactly know what to do.
The figures in the portrait were so real,
So appealing to the eye,
And although I didn't want to,
I just had to lie.

I told my wife I'd be gone only a minute or two,
Well, what else would you have me do?
I stared at the painting admiring it's every curve,
wishing that the artist could have added a bird.
I drew closer and closer, and even closer still,
also wishing that I'd taken my crazy pill,
I reached out to touch the painting,
just to feel the dried paint,
I, instead, felt something not as quaint,
I felt, I believe, the paper label of a can.

"How odd," I thought, " That I should feel such a thing,"
I heard, behind me, a camera go "Ka-ching!"
Someone touched my shoulder and brought me out of my dream,
"Having fun?" she spoke, her words smooth like cream,
My wife smiled at my confused countenance,
I nodded and glanced back at the picture, recalling my trance,
My eyes still wide as two frying pans,
Because the suspicious picture was indeed of cans.

My tale is done, I now fare thee well.
But I know I will always remember the feel of that label all too well.
