ZoBeth lived across the street from me. I was probably 3 or 4 years older than her. I remember that I wanted to take tap lessons, but changed to ballet when I learned that she was taking ballet. It wasn't that I idolized her or anything, I mean she was younger than me, you know. I was just unsure of my own standing amongst other children in town. I felt that it would be safer to be with a friend than strangers. I hated being laughed at and was not willing to take chances on a turf with no allies.

I never did grow to like ballet. In fact, I quickly switched to tap. I loved the sound that accompanied my movements. I also thought (still do) that tap shoes were incredibly sexy.
