Alphabet Soup - X

Xavier arrived in Macau on a cold winter's eve. The boat that had carried him from Bangkok had proved just barely up to the task. Three times over the course of the five week trip there was danger of sinking due to a leak. The crew worked without regard for their own well being just to keep the boat afloat. I guess they were regarding their own well being due to the fact that if the boat sank, they went down with the ship. Not a bad way to motivate people. Tie their very survival to the accomplishment of a task and then watch them go. A lesson that would not go unnoticed in the days ahead.

Xavier upon landing in the inner harbor of the ratty fishing town soon located a cheap hostel for the night. The next day dawned bright and clear, the sky being swept clean by a strong monsoon directly out of the north. Typical for this part of the world at this time of year.

Wrapping himself tightly in a woolen robe given him by his mother, Xavier winds his way through the narrow alleys which serve as streets, sewers, markets, barber stalls and gambling dens. After some time, he finds the seminary and seeks out his superior.

"Excuse me," Xavier whispers in the quiet of the office. "Have you any idea where I might locate Father Lawrence?"

"Is Father Lawrence expecting you?" the young secretary replies.

"Of course he is expecting me. Do you know who I am and what I am doing here?" Xavier thrusts out with some indigination.

"No, do you know who you are and what you are doing here?" the impish secretary retorts.

Now more than ever Xavier begins to wonder why in the world he left his teaching post in Rome to travel halfway around the world to this God forsaken cesspool of a place on the back end of China.

"Listen young man, you get on your way right now and find Father Lawrence for me before I forget my vow of peace and remind you of your vow of humility."

Not all that impressed, the secretary saunters off to, Xavier hopes, find Father Lawrence.

From a distance Xavier hears the roar of Father Lawrence and the sound of running feet. Soon, the now chastened and flustered secretary burst back into the room. "My deepest apologies sir. I had no idea. Please accept my humble apology and follow me. Father Lawrence is waiting for you."

And with that Xavier's arrival in Macau is complete.
