Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Queen Bee on May 30, 2008
"This is more a journal entry than a story or poem."

Africa

Africa. What about Africa? My cousin went to Africa a couple of years ago with her daughter. They had an amazing time, and brought me back a wonderful photograph of an elephant. I am ashamed to admit that I can't remember the name of the country in Africa they visited, but it either starts with a K or with a Z.

One of the reasons I want to write more is so that I can implant these important details into my memory better. I would like to be a storyteller, but if I can't remember details, then I just won't be any good!

Someday I would like to visit Africa. One of my sons has African genes from his birth father. He came to live with my husband and I when he was five days old and his young mother made the brave and heartbreaking choice to relinquish him to a couple who could give him a stable home. So I think it's important to get some idea of his "roots," especially in a world where bigotry and prejudice against black people is not completely dead yet. I've seen photographs and artwork depicting a beautiful, lush, teeming continent with struggling, striving, smiling, crying, people and bounding, lumbering, soaring creatures of all shapes, sizes and colors. And that waterfall! What's it called??? Dang!

Well, anyway. Africa beckons. And someday a plane will land somewhere on that continent and my family will bumble out with our eyes and hearts wide open.
