Recently I was reading an article in which Orson Scott Card (author of Ender's Game) said that he has music playing when he writes, and that the music he's listening to influences the style of writing. Or alternately, that he might choose different music to listen to depending on what he was writing.

Do you write in silence? Or do you have music playing? What sort of music?

I almost always have music playing, whether writing or not. I find sometimes I have to turn it off if I'm making a serious attempt at writing poetry, because it interferes with figuring out meter. It's like trying to count in my head while someone else is counting different numbers out loud, which doesn't work very well.

Lyrics can distract me when I'm trying to concentrate. I turn on instrumental or less lyrically driven music if I'm having trouble concentrating.

I don't know if music influences my writing very much other than in those ways. Mostly I think my writing is influenced by my mood, which is sometimes influenced by music. Just as often the music I listen to is chosen in response to my mood. I suppose it's somewhat circular.

Right now I'm listening to Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite. Lately I've been listening to a lot of classical music - mostly stuff without vocals. Of course, Borodin's Polovetsian Dances has a chorus in one section, but since they're singing in Russian, the lyrics aren't much of a distraction. :D

It usually depends on what I'm writing. When I was working on The Siege of Syrn I usually listened to like soundtracks, action type music.

It also depends on what type of mood I'm in. Sometimes I listen to that anyway, but sometimes I listen to other stuff, Casting Crowns and DC Talk, for example.

So, yeah, it depends. :-P

I am almost always listening to music of some sort. When writing, I pick mostly catchy rock songs that I sing along with as I type/write. My music influences my writing hugely, I've found, so I rarely listen to soundtracks while working, for fear of ripping off whatever movie I'm listening to. Except for 'something,' when I was listening to the 3rd LOTR.
