A preposition is a word which shows the relation of a noun or pronoun to some other word in the sentence. The word connected is called the object of the preposition. The preposition and its object along with any modifiers, is called a prepositional phrase.
Common prepositions are:
at, by, for, in, into, near, of, on, to, about, above, across, after, against, along, around, before, behind, below, beneath, between, beyond, during, inside, over, since, through, throughout, till, under, with, without.
We walked to the grocery store.
In the sentence above to is the preposition and store is the object. To the grocery store is a prepositional phrase which includes the modifiers the and grocery.
